The New Age or Lightworker community is many millions strong, and growing by the day. Most of this community is undergoing spiritual growth at its own pace in a relatively ad hoc manner. Some, however, are accelerating rapidly in a much more structured way—the mental, physical and emotional rollercoaster known as Ascension.

As I have written elsewhere, Ascension has a highly specific trajectory—geometrically known as a hyperbolic parabola—that takes ascendees [spellchecker doesn’t like it but you know who I mean] on a journey out of polarised, mind-centred 3D existence into the unified, heart-centred world of 5D.

This raises a question: what determines who is undergoing Ascension? The prevailing New Age logic is that everyone is; however it is very clear that people are being drawn into the accelerated phase of Ascension in a gradual manner. I have identified three factors affecting who gets—or at least when we’re—sucked into the Ascension pipeline:

1. Level of consciousness

This is the innate level of spiritual understanding that we are born with, along with whatever spiritual progress we have made in this lifetime. The higher the level, the more likely we are to be drawn into Ascension.

2. Level of sensitivity

In The Highly Sensitive Person, Elaine N. Aron PhD describes how “one in five people is born with a heightened sensitivity; they are often gifted with great intelligence, intuition and imagination.” The New Age community is entirely drawn from this cadre of highly sensitive people. And the higher our sensitivity, the more likely we are to be on the Ascension path. Like our level of consciousness, this is something we are born with. Unlike our level of consciousness, it is not something that seems to change.

This might make it seem like when a person will experience Ascension is entirely based on factors over which we have relatively little control. This isn’t the case, because the remaining factor is entirely down to us.

3. Willingness to feel pain

The notion that spiritual growth is a beautiful experience of gradually unfolding enlightenment retains a lot of currency. The reality of Ascension is otherwise. It is a brutal process of having all 3D judgment squeezed out of us through a series of increasingly painful and disorienting situations. To ‘pass’ each of these tests requires a willingness to feel all the unprocessed pain associated with it.

All pain is related to judgment, therefore to exit the judgmental world of 3D and enter non-judgmental 5D requires us to process and release all our pain. Level of consciousness and sensitivity notwithstanding, those who are unwilling to do so will find themselves stalled rather than motoring along the Ascension conveyor belt. For those with a Biblical bent, Jesus alludes to this in Matthew 22:14—“Many are called but few are chosen.”

Ultimately, Ascension is a test of our free will. Intend to change and be willing to work through the pain of each change, and Ascension can begin from wherever you are. The choice is yours.
